THE DMZ BATTLEFIELD — BEYOND THE TEXTBOOK
Travel with Peter Pham and his experienced battlefield team on a private journey through the former DMZ and the battlefields of northern I Corps.
From the 1972 Easter Offensive and the Battle of Quang Tri, we follow historic Route 9 west toward Camp Carroll, the Rockpile, Dakrong and Khe Sanh, before continuing to the former DMZ and the Vinh Moc Tunnels.
Throughout the journey, we use wartime maps, photographs, unit histories, military records, veterans’ accounts and the terrain itself to explain how these locations fit into the wider history of the Vietnam War.
This is not simply a sightseeing tour.
It is a battlefield study in the field—connecting the historical record with the ground where the events took place.

SECTOR I — THE QUANG TRI FRONT
MY CHANH → QUANG TRI CITY → LONG HUNG → BO DE
We begin on the coastal plain north of Hue and enter the former Quang Tri battlefield.
The focus is the 1972 Easter Offensive, the NVA advance into Quang Tri Province, the ARVN defensive line, and the subsequent counteroffensive.

SECTOR II — ROUTE 9
THE MILITARY CORRIDOR TO KHE SANH
From Quang Tri, we turn west onto historic Route 9.
This road connected the coastal plain with the mountains of western Quang Tri and the Khe Sanh area near the Laotian frontier.
CAMP CARROLL
We examine the former U.S. Marine artillery position at Camp Carroll and its role in the fire-support network along the DMZ.
THE ROCKPILE
We continue toward the Rockpile, one of the most recognizable military landmarks of the former DMZ.
The terrain provides an opportunity to understand the importance of observation, fire support, and battlefield geography along the Route 9 corridor.
DAKRONG BRIDGE
We continue west through the rugged mountain terrain toward Khe Sanh.
The changing landscape helps explain why Route 9 was such an important military corridor—and such a difficult one to operate along.
SECTOR III — THE KHE SANH BATTLEFIELD
KHE SANH — 1967–1968
THE HILLS. THE COMBAT BASE. ROUTE 9. THE 77-DAY SIEGE.
Khe Sanh is the centerpiece of the western portion of the tour.
The battlefield was shaped by a series of operations and engagements throughout 1967–1968, culminating in the 77-day siege of Khe Sanh Combat Base in 1968.
We begin with a battlefield briefing and lunch in the Khe Sanh area before continuing to the former combat base.

THE 77-DAY SIEGE — 1968
At the former Combat Base, we spend extended time studying the battlefield and surrounding terrain.
Using wartime photographs, military maps, unit histories and veterans’ accounts, we examine the development of the battle and the role of the base within the wider military situation in northern I Corps.

HIEN LUONG BRIDGE & BEN HAI RIVER
Leaving the mountains, we continue toward the former Demilitarized Zone.
At Hien Luong Bridge and the Ben Hai River, we examine the political and military geography created by the division of Vietnam.

The site offers an important transition from the battlefield around Khe Sanh and Route 9 to the former political boundary between North and South Vietnam.
SECTOR V — VINH MOC
LIFE UNDERGROUND
We finish the battlefield journey at the Vinh Moc Tunnels.
Vinh Moc provides a different perspective on the war. Rather than focusing primarily on military formations, the tunnel complex allows us to understand how a civilian community adapted to life in a heavily contested area.
Inside the tunnels, we examine:
- Living quarters

- Wells
- Medical facilities
- Meeting areas
- Underground community life
- Construction and organization of the tunnel system
The tunnels remind us that the Vietnam War was not fought only by armies.
Civilian communities also lived directly inside the battlefield.
